Corporate History

Founding and Early Engineering Innovation (1901–1910)

The origins of KramerAlbrecht date back to 1901, when Dipl.-Ing. Hermann Deimling (1872–1960) established his own construction firm in Hamburg after completing his education at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and gaining professional experience with the construction company Züblin. As an early pioneer of reinforced concrete construction, Deimling contributed to major infrastructure works, including the technically advanced substructure of Hamburg Main Railway Station, executed using approximately 800 driven reinforced concrete piles.

Establishment of an Independent Engineering Practice (1910–1928)

In 1910, Hermann Deimling founded an independent engineering office at Brahmsallee, Hamburg, marking the formal beginning of a professional engineering consultancy. This step laid the structural and technical foundations of a practice built on engineering rigor, innovation, and independence. In 1928, the office relocated to the Klosterburg building at Glockengießerwall 1, which became the firm’s long-standing base and a symbol of its growing professional stature.

Post-War Expansion and Partnership Development (1946–1972)

Following the Second World War, the firm entered a new phase of development with the arrival of Ing.-Grad. Fritz Kramer and Ing.-Grad. Heinrich Gütersloh, both graduates of the Bauschule in Berlin, who joined the practice in 1946. As authorised officers, they expanded the firm’s activities, particularly in building inspection and construction engineering. In 1953, the partnership Kramer + Gütersloh was established, under which the firm continued to grow and diversify. Fritz Kramer remained actively involved until his retirement in 1972, contributing significantly to the firm’s technical and organisational development.

Technical Consolidation and Continuity (1971–1985)

In 1971, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmut Kramer joined the firm as a construction engineer at the Hamburg office. He became a partner in 1973, working alongside Heinrich Gütersloh to guide the practice through a period of technical consolidation and steady growth. Following the death of Heinrich Gütersloh in 1985, the firm’s continuity was preserved through strong leadership and adherence to its established engineering principles.

Independent Leadership and Academic Strengthening (1985–1994)

After 1985, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmut Kramer assumed independent leadership of the firm. During this period, KramerAlbrecht strengthened its professional profile, expanded its technical capabilities, and reinforced its academic and methodological foundations. This era further solidified the firm’s reputation for engineering integrity, precision, and long-term responsibility.

Modern Leadership and Ongoing Legacy (1994–2007)

A key milestone was reached in 1994, when Dipl.-Ing. Friedhelm Albrecht joined the company as a partner, ensuring continuity of leadership and preparing the firm for future challenges. In 2007, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmut Kramer stepped down from general management for age-related reasons, marking the conclusion of a significant leadership chapter while leaving behind a firm grounded in more than a century of engineering excellence.
